Pass grazing yaks and deer along the way. The payoff is the stunning turquoise Tilicho Lake, considered sacred by Hindus. The Tilicho trek is an easy to moderate trek. There are several high mountain passes involving steep ascents and descents. Previous hiking experience along mountain terrain can be beneficial. Proper physical fitness, acclimatization, and quality gear are key to completing the trek comfortably.

You need to arrange a TIMS card (Trekkers Information Management System) and Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit. Having travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking is also essential.

Accommodation is simple, usually in local tea houses (lodges) along the trekking route. Most offer shared rooms with basic facilities. Private rooms may also be available at some locations. The quality of food and lodging may decrease at higher elevations.

The highest point of the Manang Tilicho Lake trek is Tilicho Lake, at 4,919 meters. The high altitude exposes trekkers to risks like altitude sickness, so proper acclimatization by ascending slowly is vital before attempting to reach Tilicho Lake.

This is a moderately challenging high-altitude trek, so excellent cardiovascular fitness through regular aerobic exercise in the months preceding the trek is highly recommended. High altitude trekking experience would be an added advantage. Being able to hike for 5-7 hours daily carrying a small backpack is ideal.

Quality waterproof hiking boots, warm layers, windproof/waterproof jackets and pants, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, backpack, trekking poles, headlamps, and medications are absolute essentials. Trekking gear can also be rented in Kathmandu at affordable rates.

Most tea houses along the usual stopping points on this trek route provide electricity through solar panels or generators to charge devices for a small fee. However, power supply tends to be more irregular and unavailable at higher altitudes. Carrying backup power banks is recommended.

The trail takes you through rural mountain villages, rocky moraine paths, glacier moraines, and arid regions. There are major explorations to Manang (3,519 m) and Tilicho Lake (4,919m) involving steep, rocky sections. Proper trekking shoes with good traction are a must.

Simple, delicious meals made of locally sourced ingredients like potatoes, noodles, lentils, vegetables, eggs, cheese, and meat items are available at tea houses. Dal bhat (lentil soup and rice) is a popular energizing meal. Carry high-calorie trekking snacks, too.

There are no rigid age criteria, but children under ten years are generally not recommended for such high-altitude treks. For disabled participants, the trek difficulty varies case-by-case based on individual fitness and assistance available. Consult your trek organizer regarding feasibility.

Manang Tilicho Lake Trek Permits

In order to trek in the Annapurna Conservation Area, foreign nationals must obtain two different permits.

First is the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit. This permit helps preserve the environment and local culture of the region. It costs 3000 Nepalese rupees per person.

The second permit required is the Trekkers’ Information Management Systems (TIMS) Card. TIMS helps ensure the safety and security of trekkers. It costs 2000 rupees per person.

So, the total cost for both permits comes to 5000 Nepalese rupees per foreign trekker. These permits can be obtained in Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board office by providing copies of your passport and photos. Alternatively, trekking companies like ours can arrange the permits on your behalf.

Nepalese citizens are not required to obtain any permits for trekking in the Annapurna region. Just carrying valid Nepali identification is sufficient.

Manang Tilicho Lake Trek Difficulty

Our Manang Tilicho Lake trek package is an easy trek overall. You will be hiking for around 3 days total. There will be some steep uphill and downhill sections along the trails. However, they are manageable with determination and by taking your time. The highest point reached is 4,919 meters at Tilicho Lake.

At this high altitude, there is a risk of altitude sickness. To prevent this, our itinerary allows for gradual ascent and proper acclimatization along the way. We have built-in rest days in Manang to help your body adjust.

So, while relatively challenging, the Manang Tilicho Lake trek is achievable for most people who are relatively fit and prepared. The rewards of stunning high-altitude scenery at Tilicho Lake are well worth the effort.

Best Time for Manang Tilicho Lake Trek

The prime time to trek to Tilicho Lake is during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). This avoids the extreme cold of winter and monsoon rains of summer. The most popular months are April, May, September, and October, when skies are clearest for mountain views. Temperatures will be moderately cool, ideal for trekking.

During spring, you’ll be rewarded with blooming rhododendrons and mountain wildflowers. Autumn brings crisp days and even clearer Himalayan vistas. The Manang region is quite dry, so precipitation levels stay low even during monsoon season.
